#AtoZChallenge - Perspectives: Food

Food glorious food!  Food is not just our nutrition source, it is a part of our socialization.  Time spent in the kitchen together or eating together can be some of the best quality time.  Some of the best talks I have ever had with my children were in the kitchen as I was preparing a meal and they were hanging out or sitting at the table doing homework.  Now it seems folks gather together less and less to dine.

I enjoy eating out from time to time.  Having something prepared differently from how I'd prepare it.  Or having something I have never learned to prepare.  We all have times when we need to get a quick bite, whether it is take out or a frozen entree.   Yet, you can't beat cooking from scratch for quality, freshness &
nutrition.

I feel like I'm seeing home cooking and meal preparation become a vanishing art!  I know so many families that seem to eat out at least once a day and others who cook at home only once or twice a week!  It's not that I particularly enjoy cooking, but it's something we need and I do get pleasure from having myself and my family enjoy something I prepared.

Once years ago, co-workers were excited to buy chicken, broths, and packages of dumplings from Swanson's to make chicken & dumplings.  This set them back a good twenty bucks and this was back in the  eighties!  I couldn't believe it.  I can still make a pot of dumplings to feed two families for about $8.00.

The extra cost of all this eating out, and now this new trend of delivered meals ready to prepare!  The thought just sickens me.  I think of all the extra people who could be fed with all of that excess $$.

Do you still value home cooking?  How often do you and yours dine out?  What is your favorite kitchen memory?

  1. We eat at home most of the time. My husband loves to cook and feels the same way you do! I've been in the restaurant business most of my life though, so I still enjoy seeing how other people are creating their food and dining experience.

  2. Well, I live alone, so even though I can cook, I rarely do anything that doesn't involve the microwave oven. Seems like cooking a full meal is a lot of extra work when only one person is going to eat it.

    1. That makes sense. I know some who live alone who cook a full meal and have a guest or two. And some who spend one day cooking something they really love and then making their own frozen dinners out of it.

  3. The irony is that these ready to prepare meals take as much effort as cooking from scratch. My peeve is cake mixes. They have that preservative taste. I can measure flour and sugar and add my own eggs, oil and water to cook.

  4. We eat at home mostly. But I like to grab a burger and bring it home to eat too. Sadly I could feed a family of 10 on what buying two meals at McDonald's cost nowadays!

    1. If we do McDonald's we get the little McDoubles. If I'm gonna spend the price for a big, good burger I am going to Whataburger.

  5. When times are good, we eat out Friday nights and a few times on the weekend for lunch. Other evening meals we cook; we are on our own for lunch/breakfast due to different work schedules. I don't really like to cook, hubby is the better chef, but I find myself cooking a lot more these days due to his crazy work schedule. I try to make something that can last 2 days, so less cooking :) We do have the extended family over on Sundays and most Wednesdays for an evening meal :)

  6. I do value home cooking, although the past few weeks I've been so busy I've done less of it than usual. But generally I cook from scratch, and five nights out of seven will see a home cooked meal on the table. :)

  7. We have a Whataburger right up the street and we're hooked on their Patty Melt, half it to share, add a large order of fries and two Senior drinks and we're happy campers. I get in a mood to cook for a while then off for a while.

  8. Not everyone learns to cook. A friend of mine was shocked to learn that I did, in fact, make my own dinner frequently. And then there's the time thing. Not that cooking isn't something one should do; just that sometimes it's hard to do.

  9. I don't really enjoy cooking, but I do enjoy people liking what I've made! The clean up part is the no-fun. :-) Eating out has become so crazy expensive, a glass of iced tea for $2.75! We eat out about once a week, usually on Saturday when Papa Bear gets off work early as "date night". My favorite kitchen memories are baking with my mother and sisters from the time I was very small and could sift flour while standing on a chair. I still love to bake, and I miss her baking so very much now that she has passed.
