Weekend Coffee Share

Yay!  Finally a Saturday morning where I was able to sleep as long as I wanted to and no alarm went off. Come on in and get up a cup of coffee, if you want any this late in the morning.  Right now the sun is shining and it's a beautiful Texas morning.  Lot's of rain in the forecast for the rest of the holiday weekend.  After I chill with my coffee, I've got to do some grocery shopping.

This past week at work taxed my poor brain, but it was a good week.  We are moving forward with a new plan for processing and building our routes.  We might hit a kink or snag here or there, but overall, I think it's a good plan for us and our customers. When the dust settles over this change, I have a few ideas I want to see implemented.  Got to write up a proposal of sorts for my boss to review and get the conversation started.  In February I started an internal audit of our sales tax exemptions.  Just about to have that project wrapped up.

I heard a local news station talking about this holiday last night on TV.  They said this was the recognized start of summer - actually that is June 21st.  The said this was the biggest boating weekend and did a piece on boating safety.  Number one problem is running out of gas.  But they never said a word about what Memorial Day is.

People, Memorial Day started as a day to lay wreaths and garlands upon the graves of those who gave their lives in service to this country, protecting her borders, her people, her freedoms.  Honoring them for this supreme sacrifice.  In 2000, a resolution was passed asking us to pause at 3:00pm local time "to remember and reflect upon the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all".  Please don't let this day go by without in some way large or small remembering it's meaning! Me, I try to take flowers to the Veteran's memorial in our town and/or put flags on graves of family members who served. For an excellent post from a Vet's perspective: Got a Letter in the Mail!

Seems, once again, I've monopolized the conversation.  Let's get another cup. So, what has work been like for you, lately?  How do you honor our fallen hero's on this day?

  1. Enjoy the weekend! In Wisconsin we have some rain coming for the weekend too so today is the day for outside projects for us. Except for a little blogging for me we will be outside today.

  2. We started our weekend in the DFW area, gray and dreary and now rain. No flag flying for us, or a dunk in the pool. Too cold. Work's been work, just plugging along. Enjoy your weekend

    1. Hot enough to enjoy the pool here! If the thunderstorms hold off.

  3. Ever since I was a very small girl we decorated all the graves of our loved one who had passed on before us. I remember knowing that Memorial Day was for the Vets, but we didn't have family members who had served in past wars. We did take flowers to everyone we knew who had died. And then we had a big picnic. This weekend is full of rain here in Kansas. Hope I can make it to the cemetery! Have a good weekend Barbara!

  4. Drove by the cemetery here today and saw flags on graves; I know the military cemetery where hubby's parents are buried will have put flags on all the graves. Thankful for those who fought and died for my freedom.

Seems like good changes at work!

    1. Yes, I think it will end up being beneficial to us, our customers, all the way around.

  5. My father was a disabled (not in combat) veteran of World War II. I will think of him on Monday along with the other veterans, dead and living, I know. A former manager who served two tours (volunteered for both) in Vietnam....my husband's late uncle who fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The sons of two work friends who fought in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. An unknown person decorates my neighborhood, every year with flags pushed into lawns at the curb of every house. It is always breezy and they wave in the breeze. They are waving now, to remind us of what Memorial Day is supposed to mean. And thank you for sharing the link about the "Bill for Freedom". It is sadly, way too true.

    1. Some unknown person has a lovely tradition going in your neighborhood! Glad you liked the link. The Vet is a great guy and is actively trying to get support for and spread awareness about PTSD.

  6. My junior high school had a bit Memorial Day thing. We'd dress up, and there would be a big assembly. We'd do it the Friday before.

    1. Our local schools usually have a big thing for Veteran's Day to honor men & women in our community.

  7. We put our flag out but the wind was being so hard on it we brought it back in for now. Raining here again and supposed to be heavy thunderstorms tomorrow.

    1. Ha, at least you are trying. I respect that you respect the flag enough not to have it out in rain. Of course they make those all weather ones.

  8. I fly my flag every day 24/7. Remembering the reason why I can fly it is all for this weekend. I love America and am proud to be an American. Love my coffee too!

  9. I also fly my flag 24/7, and I'll add a few smaller ones along the front of my house. We'll meet the rest of the family at the cemetery to visit my Dad and go have lunch afterward.
Being a Veteran myself, I always find it awkward when people send messages on Facebook and such, thanking me for my service. What I really want to tell them is how this day is not about me - that I'm a lucky one who still has a pulse!

    1. Well, though I suppose it's best to just graciously say thank you, I do see your point. Better to thank you on Veteran's Day and leave Memorial Day to remember those that came home draped with a flag.

    1. We had one hard rain yesterday a little after noon. Then late yesterday we all were outside with a nice breeze. Fried fish, played horseshoes and washers. Today one line of showers has just moved through. And we'll see. I really hope to log some pool time!

  11. Sleeping late is one of life's small pleasures.

A park not far from where I live recently had a wall honoring those killed in action in Vietnam set up. I went with some family members to visit it and look for a relative's name. None of us ever had the chance to actually meet him (those of us who went weren't even born when he died), but he's still family, which makes his sacrifice impact us a little more.

    1. Knowing someone was from your home town, or part of your family does make the sacrifice made hit closer to our hearts it seems. I just hope weather will allow me to make my little pilgrimage tomorrow.

  12. I went to college in Columbus, MS, which is where the Memorial Day traditions started---I've always seen it as a somber occasion. Somehow, barbecues and celebrations just don't seem right for me on such a day.

Regardless, hope you have a good weekend---sleeping late is always a nice start. :)

  13. I've heard we're supposed to have a moment of silence at 3:00 PM to remember those who have fought in wars. I'm going to do that this year.

Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. You are correct! And I thank you for mentioning it, because I had started to in a sentence above and then just never finished it! Wow, must of been one of those life interruptions.

  14. Hi Barbara! Sounds like a lovely start to the day. So glad you were able to sleep in. I wish I could--whenever I try, I end up laying in bed awake. Hope the rain clouds held out and the sunshine persisted through the weekend. I don't do a whole lot to celebrate Memorial Day beyond remembering those who have served. I like Sherry's idea of a moment of silence at 3p.m. I might have to try that too. :) Shelah

  15. It was a resolution passed in 2000. And sure, anything large or small, just so we never forget that our freedoms have never been free.

  16. Thanks for sharing that post. I never forget about what this day is for. I find those protesting at military funerals some of the most vile people in our country.

    1. To protest or interrupt ANY funeral is gross disrespect and no one deserves that. Everyone should be able to bury their dead in peace.

  17. A great reminder to pause and remember those to whom we owe so much... thanks!

  18. My daughter, almost 12, and I took a predawn walk. We listened to bullfrogs singing for mates, and admired the bunting on a neighbor's porch. We looked at a friend's image of a torn flag, and discussed flag etiquette and the meaning of the day.

    Then we went to bed.

I've got a new sense of ease and possibility with my writing, and there's something wonderfully magical in that! =)

So glad you stopped by! Come 'round any time. ~ Barbara
