Perspectives on this past Monday

Hello!  I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day.  We did!  I cooked a brisket in the oven and all the sides.  Cut up our first watermelon of the year.  Thankfully, none of us have lost a family member in service of our country.  So, this year, we simply paused, reflected and prayed at 3:00 in honor of those who did make the ultimate sacrifice.  My kids came over later in the evening.  We tried out the pool.  Bubba walked over and invited our neighbor, a WWII veteran, to join us for supper.  One of our nephews stopped by and everyone played some horseshoes.  When we came in to eat, I was honored to have Bubba lead us in prayer!  So, for me, it was a good day.

I overheard on the local news, Sunday night, that a local veteran had his American flag he was displaying at his house, torn down and ripped up.  My heart broke for him!  I was so disgusted to think anyone could and would do such a heinous thing.  One of those things that make you wonder just what this country is coming to.

Then on Tuesday evening, I saw a report on a local man who had gone to the mall on Monday and played taps there.  Someone took a video of it, and it went viral.  The news station had him in interviewing him.  He's in the Texas guard.  Wanted to make it clear he, himself, is not a veteran.  Stressed what it meant to him to be able to do something to help others remember what the day is about, find the time to pause and reflect.  I was so proud to think that someone would take the time to do such a thing.  One of those things that makes you think there might be hope for us yet.

What's the most touching thing that happened in your day?  The worst local  news you heard?  What did you hear about or see that lifted your spirits?

See the Army Veteran who had his flag destroyed, and the man who played taps in the mall.

    1. Hard to hear and not become emotional, especially when it is played live.

  2. Playing Taps at the mall is cool. Almost offsets the idiots who burned the flag.

  4. It's a shame when people feel the need to offend someone else to feel exhilarated. The need to destroy what someone has worked hard for, to take what is not theirs, all because they are the lazy ones and/or jealous. I think it all boils down to that.

    1. You may be on to something, Jeffrey. I really can't fathom why anyone would want to do that.

  8. Those people who destroyed the flag were idiots! What happened to the days when people proudly displayed their flags outside their homes every day?

    1. I tell you, I think a few do it out of hate for the US or veterans. But most things like this, I think are done just for the shock value of it. I think thumbing their noses at something that means a lot to someone else is their way of making themselves feel big. They are people who don't really value anything in life. Amoral.

  9. I can't remember any touching thing for that day in particular, but last night a veteran helped me load some of the heavy groceries into the car. David is recovering from three strokes in the past week and I don't want him to do any heavy lifting. His balance is off and he might fall. The veteran was heading toward his car and asked if me and Laynie needed help and he put the heavy thing in the car.

Veterans often get treated like crap from people in general, but what boils my blood is the treatment they get from the government that they served. I won't get started on that one here.

Have a blessed night and thank you to all those that have served and are serving!

  10. Glad I'm not the only one who gets choked up by Taps!
That's so nice to invite the neighbor over - I bet he has some great stories!
My personal peeve...I am a US Navy Veteran. Memorial Day isn't about me, so don't thank me. I am alive & whole, both physically & mentally. I'm lucky. This day is about those who have paid the ultimate price, or who did their time and are now reporting for duty in Heaven. (rant over!)

    1. I hear you, Lisa! I think you would have really liked my post "It's not all Cookouts" that I did before Memorial Day reminding everyone of what it is really about.
