Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you I can't visit for long. Hubby has a big day planned for us.  I put over 17,000 miles on my car each year just commuting back and forth to work. Pete's disabled and can't do all the things he used to do. Back when I was still driving my old Taurus, twice I had trouble and when I phoned home he had to tell me he couldn't come, couldn't help me and I'd have to call someone else.  Thankfully, both times Bubba was working in or near town and was able to help me.  But it must of been the hardest thing Pete has ever done to tell me that!  He'd always been there in my hour of need, before.

Plus, after he pays my car note each month and our car insurance, there isn't much left over for repairs.  He does that and pays his medical for the most part.  I pay other bills and buy groceries, medicines, etc.  And together we pay our electric bills.  So, he figures that as long as I am still working, he needs to keep me in something that has full factory warranty, and gets the good gas mileage. He has just accepted that we will always have a car note at least until I retire. Part of the warranties on my 2011 Chevy Cruze are about to expire and he has decided it is time to trade up to a low mileage 2014 or 2015 for the same monthly note.

Now, I totally adore my car.  And I would never ask for anything else in the foreseeable future.  But I see the reason of his thinking.  So, he swung by when he was out and about yesterday and told his guy what we were looking to do. They have a large inventory to choose from right now and told him it was indeed a good time to do it and they should be able to accommodate our desires and our needs.

So, I had to set my alarm clock on a Saturday!  And I have to cut my coffee time short, because we have an appointment to go try to pick out my next new ride.

Come back tomorrow if you feel like it.  Bubba is home and I'll be cooking one of his favorite meals after church: meatballs, rice and gravy.    We'll all have plenty of time to visit then.

  1. How fun to be getting a new car but it does make sense with all the driving you do to be in something safe and reliable. I barely drive 0.01% of what you drive annually :) Have fun car shopping.

    1. Oh, it's exhausting! No purchase today. Hard to find anything comparably equipped to my Cruze for the note we want to pay.

  2. He wants you to be safe! And knowing he might not be able to help you makes it even more important to him.
Hope you find just the right car.

  3. Nothing beats getting a new car. I am sure this will give your husband so much peace of mind. My Richard was much the same way. Enjoy!

    1. You're right about that Paula. For most of our lives, he just put my in anything, cause he could fix anything himself. Do repairs that most folks spent $500-$1500 for, for only $50-$200, but those days are gone.

    1. I love what I'm driving. We wouldn't even be looking at all if Pete still felt like working on them. Though we've had not one bit of trouble out of mine. But you know how they seem to start breaking about the time the warranty expires. LOL

  7. new car fever - sounds practical. I have a 2012 Cruze and it's dependable enough with plenty of zoom to keep me out of the way of big trucks on the freeway. Hope the car buying went well and that you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Sunday dinner sounds tasty.

    1. The Cruze is awesome isn't it? My 2011 LT has everything that could come on one except fog lights. Did you know that now you can't get all of that on an LT? You have to go up a class. So we're checking out other makes and models.

  8. It's good to be safe. Maybe your new car will be better than the old. As for roadside help, do you have AAA? I can't tell you how many times they've come to my rescue.

    1. No, our whole lives we never had anything because, well, Pete could do it all. With my Cruze is the first time we ever had anything, it came with Onstar. Recently, we turned it off and went with a service through Verizon that helps no matter who's car you are in, as long as your cell phone is with you.

    1. Well, we're looking. I don't want him to take a big hit to do it.

  10. Good luck, I relate. My car is getting old, but I really like it. It's the 2nd Saturn I've had in a row,and now they don't make them, errrrrrrrrr. I think mine is a 2006? Really don't know, and I like not having a payment. But, it sounds like with the distance you go, the need to be safe and he's not being able to assist it's a good idea. Post a picture and tell us what you end up with.

    1. When we finally get there, I think a picture post is a great idea! I adore my Cruze and would gladly just keep it. But, I've always left such decisions pretty much up to him.

    1. Yes, I've known a lot of folks, especially older people or folks in retirement, who want to be able to plan their monthly expenses without any surprises.

    1. It might, as yet, be awhile, as my car is fine and I love it, and we are exploring a wide variety of options. After the years of him not working or having disability, or me being our soul support, we had just not done anything on credit. So our credit history disappeared except for some medical bills Pete had accumulated while fighting to get on disability. So when we purchased a couple of years ago, we had to go through an expensive creditor to get started. Then about nine months later Pete moved it over to his credit union to cut his interest rate and lower his note. I'm glad to say in only this short time, we've got our credit back to a high six, but that is still not good enough for the best offers. I'm proud of my twenty-six year old son, who has a near perfect credit score! I think all too often young people starting out don't realize how important that can be in life.
