Monday Morning Question

Playing along with Krissy this morning!  Here's the question:

What is the weirdest food you've ever eaten?

And here's my answer:  I may have eaten a lot of things some folks would find weird.  Crawfish, boudain, cracklins', gar balls.  But those things aren't really weird.  Not for the place I live anyways.

Back when I was in school, my cousin and his family were down from Arkansas.  He was a Deputy there at the time.  Seems a bear had been killed.  Not sure of the circumstances, but cousin had a large amount of bear meat with him.  The family had a huge Bar-B-Que of bear.  Not bad at all.

And then once when visiting Pete's dad when he was camped on the Neches River, I went in the camper and found a large pot of dumplings.  Helped my plate.  Took a bite of dumpling.  Heard him telling Pete how he'd shot some crows....and then how they ended up in his pot, for dumplings!  I put the rest back in the pot.

  2. I'm not familiar with boudain, cracklins', gar balls; obviously, like you said, local "favorites"

interesting eats; I have to say I would have done the same with the dumplings, crow doesn't seem too appetizing

  5. Funny about the crow dumplins. We use to have cracklins when mama and daddy killed a hog. John and I have eaten lots of wild hog. Can't think of anything really unusual. I sure would not eat rattlesnake. We ate a lot of squirrel when I was growing up. paula

  6. Now that is REALLY eating crow! LOLL..oh man. Never had bear. I reckon the some of the strangest things I have eaten is Tripe (dont really like it). Gator tail. Frog legs. squid. Dont like squid. I watched this show on the Foodnetwork one time, of a guy that travels all over the world and tries the local food. Some of it was just downright gross. The inside of cowhooves...in soup? Chewy, not very edible. Iguana...just chopped up, gutted, like you would a chicken I guess...chop the legs...cook in a leaf over fire...lol. Tasty.

  9. Hi Barbara- Idon't know how wierd either, but back home in Canada, I used to eat poutin, which is cheese curds in gravy (yummy) When I moved to Texas, and also found here in  florida, I used to think it was strange for people to eat a white gluey type gravy with sausage bits in it with biscuits- but boy do I love sausage gravy and biscuits now!  I guess the really strangest thing I ever ate was when I worked at a dirt pit, there was a truck driver who used to hunt (not always legally either) and he gave me a piece of Curlew  which is like a cow bird.  It was pretty good, but small as it is a pretty skinny leg, and all dark meat.  I also tried turtle- tasted like- well, chicken.  I don't think I'll be going on a hunt myself anytime soon!  God Bless!!  Carolyn
