"They
are men of violence and injustice. O my soul stay away from them. May
I never be a party to their wicked plans. For in their anger they
murdered a man and maimed oxen just for fun. Cursed be their anger,
for it is fierce and cruel."
Genesis 49:5-7, TLB
This is Jacob (Israel) speaking of two of his own sons! He was on his deathbed, giving them blessings for their future. These two were so angry and bad that he had not one good word for them.
Just to be angry is not sin. You know, Jesus was angry when he cleansed the temple. But we all too often get angry for totally unrighteous reasons. Selfish reasons, that stem from pride. While Christ's actions driving the animals from the temple and overturning the money changers tables drew criticism from the authorities, in the eyes of God he did nothing wrong. All too often our anger leads to wrong actions and sin.
Anger left to simmer can lead to violence. Don't keep company with angry people! At the worst anger can be infectious. In the least, you can be swept up or harmed by their actions.
My mother's mother, Mama Ruth always said you could judge a lot about a man's character by the way he treated animals. Violence and cruelty are never God's way! We are in the world, but be not of the world.
May God bless each soul that happens this way today!

"Don't keep company with angry people! At the worst anger can be infectious." That's very true. I feel the same way about excessively negative people.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! Negativity can be contagious! And it is a shame, because often the negative ones need some company, but one surely has to be careful.
DeleteI'm doing a study on spiritual warfare and one of the statements there rang so true for me. Because we are born into the world, we naturally think according to it (think how easy it is to get angry, or to lie, etc). We have to be transformed to understand God's wages. His ways are not natural to use. We constantly need to crucify our natural inclinations and desire to receive all that God has for us. We need to consciously make the effort daily to be in the world but not be of the world. I know its a struggle for me because my default mode is to be impatient, bitter, anxious, etc., but thankfully God did say the battle does belong to him.

Amen! All roads lead back to staying in that close relationship with our Lord & Savior.
DeleteWe need to know if it is a healthy anger that comes from God or anger that stems from the devil.
ReplyDeleteExactly. We can be vessels of righteous anger used by God, but there is no spite, no personal gain in it. But by and large, we become angry for much more personal reasons. That anger clouds judgement, and often leads us into sin.
DeleteVery profound words! I am working on controlling my anger and the amount of negativity that fills my life at times. Hard work. I have to trust in God!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Paula! We need Him every minute of every day in order to live for Him.
DeleteHi Barbara!
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't believe how timely this post is for me just now. I'll never understand why funerals bring out (or reveal) the worst in people. Judging character by how one treats his animals is tried and true ;-)
It is true that you sometimes learn surprising things about the character of others after a death.
DeleteI very hard and heavy read

Yes, it is in many respects. So good to have you stop by!
DeleteAnger is so unproductive. As I grow older I find it much easier to keep my anger in check. Over the years I've found that my anger doesn't do anything to make a situation better.

Great point! Anger re-channeled in motivation might end up being beneficial, but not by itself, as it's self. Anger is just too unruly.
DeleteVery true and very timely. Anger at injustice is valid, the rest is just useless and harmful. Control and patience are not easy though, but it does get better with age.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughts!
DeleteSOOO much Anger in our world today. This post is much needed

ReplyDeleteThe Bible is full of wonderful teachings, instructing us how live and guard our lives. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be angry without sin? I reckon Christ is the only person to ever do this. Thanks for the encouragement to be more like Jesus and less like the world. Have a blessed day!
So right! Only Christ. Thank you, Cathy.
