I Saw It On Facebook

So, when I read this, I had to smile.  I tend to talk out loud quite often.  Not always necessarily to myself, but sometimes yes.

If I am extremely upset I will pace around the house talking to myself.  Sometimes I will turn it into a prayer.

When I am trying to do something and hit a problem, I will talk out loud.  Sometimes to myself, "Now, Barbara, what were you thinking."  and sometimes to the thing I'm working with/on.  For example, the computer at work:  "I clicked the stupid square, now go!"

If I'm home alone and really busy around the house, sometimes I'll announce out loud to myself what I am going to do.  "Let's see.  I'll wash up these dishes, after I start that load of clothes, then I'll scrub the shower and take me a shower.  Then I'll fix me a little something to eat...."

And, on occasion, if I am listening to radio or TV by myself, I'll respond verbally to what I am listening to or watching.  Same thing if I see something out the window at the house or on the side of the road while driving.  I may remark out loud, or quip a joke to myself.

Way back in 2006, I took one of those online quizzes to see how weird I was.  Here's the results:

You Are 70% Weird
You're so weird, you think you're *totally* normal. Right?
But you wig out even the biggest of circus freaks!
I treasure my weirdness.  That's one thing I'm looking forward to in my old age:  just letting it all hang out and making the younger generation just deal with it.  Well, no, actually, I think I'm pretty much already doing that.

Now, be honest.  Do you ever talk out loud in any of the ways I do?  Are you willing to take the weirdness test?  Will you share your result with us here?

  1. I talk out loud to the television set. Never helps. My team still loses.

  2. Yep, I do all those. I talk to everything all the time. It's only crazy if you get answers back. (I got 70% weird, too.)

  3. I thought for sure I'd be more than 40% weird! "Normal enough to know you're weird, but too damn weird to do anything about it"

  4. I do all that - I don't even need the test!!

I'm more hard on myself, though. I find myself chastising me all day long.

"Man, that was stupid!" or "Is that the best you can do?"

I'm the worst boss I ever had.

  5. I got 40% weird and yet I'm sure it's gotta be more than that. I truly feel like I don't belong at most of Ray's family stuff, at work, etc. I'm not talking to myself but the inner dialogue is probably scary. Best to not discuss further. Thanks for this post. Maybe it's just we writers......yeah, let's call it that and agree that we are extra "sensitive".

    1. The writers angle works for me! Well, except I'm not really a writer. Oh, well, I'm past caring if I have an excuse or not.

  6. I do talk out loud a lot to myself but working at home it can get a bit lonesome if I don't have anyone to talk to :)

  7. I rarely talk to myself and I live alone so I maybe should. I took the quiz. Sixty per cent weird. I think my kids would say I am more like 90% but what do they know? :)

    1. LOL I think it may be rather normal for one's kids to think one is weird.

  8. I talk out loud to everything and especially to myself. No one listens to me more than myself! And I am now off to take the test...Happy Wednesday!

  9. Lol I'm constantly singing out loud and muttering random stuff to myself when I'm alone. I think it's a certain way for people to process their thoughts and the information they receive from external sources, like the internet and their surroundings. A totally normal habit, I say! And I think you've got a great attitude - own your weirdness! It's what makes you uniquely you! As members of the younger generation, we like to say, "You do you!" ;)

    1. I like YOUR attitude! And your theory on self talking. Makes it sound all so rational and sane.

  10. This made me smile as well! I talk to myself when I am alone sometimes. I remember reading quite a while back that a psychologist said that it is fine to talk to yourself, just make sure you don't respond. LOL! :)

  11. I don't talk out loud to myself much. I chat with the dogs though.

I have a vague memory of taking one of those "how weird are you?" quizzes a while back. Can't tell you the exact result, but it was low enough to make my friends think it was broken. :)

    1. Yes, animals are always a good excuse! ;) I love that line about the test being broken.

  12. I always talk to myself too. All day. my coworkers will say Huh? or what? and I'm constantly having to say nevermind I'm talking to myself. I especially talk more in the car. I talk to the traffic around me. I'm pretty weird, I don't need to take a test. LOL

  13. Yep. I talk to myself. Even my kids notice. :) I just tell them it's because I'm a weird artsy person.

    1. Yeah, people use the artsy card to get away with a lot of stuff!

    2. Oh I'm SO artistic I can't stand myself...lmbo ;-)

  14. Ok I won't take the test, only because I already know the answer. Everything you do, I do too lol. With gusto. Sometimes in Latin. Sometimes very loudly. Yet one thing you said got to me: you find yourself turning a frustrated quip into a meaningful prayer and though you might not have a strong faith, you at least aren't talking to yourself anymore and in fact to the only power that matters, to my mind. Takes awhile to get there and whether you're kidding yourself or not, addressing the God of your youth is far more comforting than complaining into the air! Thanks for a great post, much love <3 !
